Dust Merchant - Collection 007
Designed exclusively for The Dust Merchant, a gift and homewares store based in the Wheatbelt town of Kellerberrin.
Inspired by scenes from the Wheatbelt; Canola in bloom, fields of everlastings in yellow, pink and blue hues, delicate gum blossom and dainty springtime orchids.
The Dust Merchant collection was designed to celebrate not only the characteristic aspects of the Wheatbelt (think expansive fields of yellow Canola and paper daisies growing on the roadside), but also to highlight the little known aspects of the Wheatbelt's biodiversity.
Artwork Details
Clockwise from left.
Eucalyptus synandra – Commonly known as the Jingymia Mallee, this Eucalypt species is conservation significant, listed as Vulnerable as it is now only found in the northern Wheatbelt from Morawa to Koorda and near Beacon. The soft yellow graduating to pink in the bell-shaped flowers of this species were inspiring to paint, especially contrasted against a neon pink background.
Oil and acrylic on canvas. 405 x 505mm.
Granite Sun Orchid – An endemic orchid species, Thelymitra petrophila, or Granite Sun Orchid, is found through the drier inland portions of WA from Kalbarri to the Nullabor. It flowers from September to October and is usually found near granite outcrops. The beautiful purple-blue of this orchid inspired me, and the contrasting vibrant yellow textured background picks up on the yellow of the Canola flowers.
Oil and mixed media on canvas. 300 x 300mm.
Blood Spider Orchid – Commonly known as the Blood Spider Orchid, Caladenia filifera is a species of orchid endemic to the Wheatbelt and Jarrah Forest regions. It flowers from September to October in well drained soils high in the landscape. The deep red of this species captivated me, and pairs so nicely with softer tones of lilac and pink. This work picks up on the magenta colours in Vase of Canola.
Oil and mixed media on canvas. 300 x 300mm.
Field of Everlastings – I took inspiration from landscape images of everlastings in bloom for this piece – the blue of the sky, the green of the trees and the yellows, pinks and purples of a sea of everlastings.
Acrylic on canvas, unframed. 600 x 600mm.
Vase of Canola – When one thinks of Canola, great expanses of yellow fields come to mind. I wanted to take a closer view of the Canola flower and present it in a fun way – the bright yellow flowers are offset with the pinks and purples of the patterned background, which was also designed to pick up on the colours in the Field of Everlastings artwork.Oil on canvas, unframed. 460 x 360mm.
