Sea Treasure - Collection 011

Inspired by a wintery day of beach combing after a storm, washed up relics of the sea, and the south coast of Western Australia.

Alcyonacea – Alcyonacea is the scientific order of soft corals. I found these specimens washed up on the beach in Gracetown, WA, after some wild stormy weather. Still brightly coloured, I found them so beautiful and wanted to capture their striking colours and formations. These particular specimens are most likely from the Melithaea or Mopsella genera.

Custom acrylic chalk paint, fine art watercolour paper, floating acrylic frame. Framed dimensions 400x500mm.

Pink Ocean – Textured and reminiscent of waves crashing into each other, but with an unexpected twist of uncharacteristic colour, this work is intended to contrast with the pinks in Alcyonacea and Shellfish.

Gracetown - Greenlip Abalone shells made the perfect background for painting these tiny depictions of Gracetown beach and a wave. They bring an interesting 3D element to the collection.

Shell Fish – On my first visit to the new museum, I bought the book Rare Treasures from the library of the Natural History Museum. The book came with a series of reproduction natural history prints, including the print which I have used as the background for this work - Louis Renard's (1678-1746) depiction of white-barred triggerfish, clown triggerfish and a crayfish. I chose to depict one of my own shell collections in an unnatural blue hue to complement the vintage print.

Oval Yves – This vintage frame had an unusual oval shaped velvet mount, in a horrible maroon colour! I liked that the oval shape referenced back to the oval shape of the Abalone shells. I painted the matt and velvet mount in Yves Klein Blue, which contrasts against the warm pinks and oranges in the other works.

Australis - The Austral Scallop, or Chlamys australis is the species that this work is inspired by. On a field trip near Onslow, WA, I was walking along a remote stretch of coastline littered with corals and shells. I came across these brilliantly orange and yellow coloured shells then.

Shell Mosaic – Collected shells and coral fragments feature in this contemporary textured work. I wanted to bring a fun element to the piece, so I added balls all around the frame.

• Acrylic glazing is much safer than glass as it is less prone to breakage, and it is also lighter than traditional glass. Because it is acrylic, it can easily scratch and requires special care when cleaning and handling. If cleaning, only use a lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid using glass cleaners that contain ammonia or alcohol, as this can damage the artwork.
